I have some questions regarding STAAD that I hope you can help me with.
When defining unsymmetrical I section in STAAD, that have different flange thickness and width, there is some differences between using AISC 360-10 and AISC 360-16 and whether I defined it using the user table or the tapered section icon :
| AISC 360-10 | AISC 360 -16 |
user table | Reports only one Section modulus Sxx- ( So are all the checks are using this value ?? whether it is compression flange or tension flange ?) | Reports both Section modulus for top flange and bottom flange (Sxx-& Sxx+ So accordingly each value is being used when required ??) |
Tapered | Reports only one Section modulus Sxx- ( So all the checks are using this value ?? ) | Reports both Section modulus for top flange and bottom flange (Sxx-&Sxx+) |
| the same section defined using user table and Tapered section will result different utilization ratio | the same section defined using user table and Tapered section will result the same utilization ratio |
So can you help me understand how STAAD finds the Section properties for user defined sections ?
Also, I want to ask how STAAD finds the properties for tapered sections with variable web depth as shown below and how STAAD Design these sections ? (Does it finds an equivalent section between the ending nodes that have constant geometric properties and applies it to the whole member or it divides the member into number of sections and do interpolate between those sections )
